Equipment
- Medium bowl, liquid measuring cup, or mason jar - I love using a mason jar or liquid measuring cup to mix this salad dressing recipe in because it makes it super easy to pour over whatever salad or food you want to top with it!
- Whisk (optional) - this will ensure even mixing of all of the ingredients if you aren't shaking in a mason jar.
Ingredients
Full ingredients, measurements, and instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Extra virigin olive oil (EVOO) - EVOO has such a robust flavor compared to other oils, and even regular olive oil. It's my go-to oil for make homemade salad dressing because of the flavor profile. You can use other oils but I highly recommend EVOO!
- Apple cider vinegar - any delicious salad dressing will have some sort of vinegar to add a tangy bite! You can use any neutral vinegar like white wine, white balsamic, or champagne. Regular balsamic may change the flavor slightly!
- Fresh lime juice - a crucial ingredient! Using fresh limes is one of the most important part of this recipe if you really want that bright and tangy fresh flavor. You can use store-bought lime juice but fresh is definitely preferred! You can even add a few dashes from fresh lime zest for even more lime flavor.
- Honey - I love using honey or maple syrup for natural sweetness in this honey lime dressing recipe.
- Seasonings - garlic powder, chili powder, salt, and black pepper add a variety of flavors.

Variations & Substitutions
- Adding fresh herbs, like fresh mint and cilantro, will add amazing flavor to this dressing.
- Using different vinegars will also subtly change the flavor of the recipe, depending on what vibe you're going for.
- I'm a big fan of chopping up fresh garlic cloves and shallots to throw into this dressing if I have them on hand.
Serving
- Some of my favorite uses for this honey lime dressing are:
- Drizzling on top of tropical fruit like mango and pineapple
- On a watermelon cucumber salad with feta cheese
- With a southwest black bean salad made with black beans, red onion, red bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, fire roasted corn, and cilantro
- Drizzling on a grain bowl or quinoa salad
- As a marinade for steak, chicken, salmon, and/or shrimp
- I love making this tangy honey lime dressing in a mason jar so I can shake it up before using and simply pour over whatever we're having it on!
Storage & Making Ahead
- Store this dressing in an airtight container (like a mason jar) in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- This dressing is honestly better the next day, after all of the flavors have melded together. The EVOO may harden in the refrigerator, so I recommend leaving it out at room temperature a few hours before using or pop in the microwave for 30-45 seconds to melt the oil for best results!
Recipe FAQ
Yes! We are sticklers for using high quality ingredients whenever we can and this is a big one. A good EVOO will be dark in color and have a robust flavor.
This can happen with keeping oils in the fridge. Simply leave it on the counter for ~15-30 minutes and mix before using!
It's muchhhh better! Store-bought dressings can have preservatives and other ingredients that affect the taste and even mouthfeel. We strongly prefer homemade dressings just because they taste better!
Not a problem! You can use real maple syrup, agave, plain sugar, or omit the added sweetness altogether! Note that if you use granulated sugar, it may take some time to dissolve.
The secret to a good salad dressing is using fresh, high quality ingredients. Homemade salad dressings are easy to make and definitely worth it! I love using fresh citrus juices, high quality extra virgin olive oil, vinegars, fresh/dried herbs and other seasonings.
Two Tablespoons of this honey lime vinaigrette have 82 calories, assuming the recipe is followed as-is.
